Who qualifies for Italian citizenship by descent
The 2025 law changed who qualifies and how to apply. These are the routes still open, and the check tests your family line against each one.
- A parent or grandparent born in Italy. Under the 2025 law this is the main route by descent (jure sanguinis), recognized at a consulate where you live or at a comune if you live in Italy. A great grandparent is usually too far back, unless your application or appointment was booked before March 27, 2025.
- An Italian woman in your line who had a child before 1948. A consulate will say no to these lines, but an Italian court can recognize them, and the generational limit does not apply. Court cases go to our partner attorney in Naples.
- A parent who naturalized while your ancestor was a minor. The so called minor issue. A 2026 ruling of Italy's Supreme Court settled it for many families, and people refused on it in 2023 and 2024 can now ask for their case to be looked at again. The check spots it and a person on our team reviews it.
- Living in Italy. Children and grandchildren of people born in Italy can now naturalize after 2 years of residence. The check also tells you if this route fits your family.

Why Italian citizenship is worth it
Your children may be able to inherit it
Whether it passes to your children depends on each case: when and where they were born, and steps the 2025 law now requires for children born abroad, such as a declaration made within a year of their birth. It is checked case by case, never assumed.
Italy's public healthcare
Once you live in Italy you can register with the national health service on the same terms as any Italian resident, funded mainly through taxes rather than private premiums. While you're covered there, the European Health Insurance Card covers necessary care on trips elsewhere in the EU.

Live in any of the 27 member states without a visa or a sponsor. Stays longer than three months need work, study, or your own means and health cover, under EU free-movement law rather than a country's immigration system.

What if I don't know exact dates or details?

How far back can my Italian ancestor be?
Under the 2025 law, usually no further back than a grandparent, with exceptions, for example if your application or consulate appointment was booked before March 27, 2025. The check works out which rule applies to your line.
